DAY 1
Mondaino and the Mill of the Lower Door
Mondaino and the Mill of the Lower Door

The best way to start this holiday is to sightsee the Medieval village of Mondaino, one of the most beautiful villages of Romagna, thanks to its Medieval castle and its distinctive half-circular square with a Neoclassical porch looking out to it. This village is famous for its Buck Race, a nationally relevant historical re-enactment. We suggest you to sightsee the Mill of the Lower Door (Mulino della Porta di Sotto) to taste and buy local charcuterie and cheese.

DAY 2
Gradara
Gradara

To remain focused on the same subject, you can head for Gradara, a hill village at the border between Romagna and the Marche, with its castle standing out from the top, surrounded by a Medieval village enclosed in a double circle of walls. This castle used to host some powerful Medieval and Renaissance dynasties such as the Malatestas and the Sforzas; we suggest you a guided tour of its rooms and watch walkways to then crown your day with a typical dinner at the village.

DAY 3
Sassofeltrio and Monte Cerignone
Sassofeltrio and Monte Cerignone

Sassofeltrio is another piece of testimony of the time, in which the Malatestas and the Montefeltroes used to dispute the lands between Romagna and the Marche and had castles and fortresses built to exert their control over the territories. Sassofeltrio unfortunately keeps very few remnants of its castle, situated in the most panoramic point of the city. We suggest you to visit Monte Cerignone and its Medieval village, as well, to then have dinner at Osteria Clementina.

DAY 4
San Leo and Sogliano
San Leo and Sogliano

Every alchemy connoisseur will know about the Earl of Cagliostro and will thus have to know about San Leo, in whose fortress he was imprisoned and died. Very enchanting is the visit to the castle and its rooms, including Cagliostro’s cell, but also the village with its distinctive lanes and panoramic viewpoints is worth a visit. Those who love local food and wine will not have to miss a visit to San Sogliano on the Rubicon, a place mostly known for the production of pit cheese, a local cheese seasoned in ancient wheat pits.
